On 7 December, Garmin launched the new Tacx Neo 3M presents. Tacx has been part of Garmin since the takeover in 2019. We already know Road Feel from the Tacx Neo 2T and the Tacx Neo Bike. However, the new Smart Trainer brings even more of a reality feeling thanks to integrated motion plates.
Tacx continues to rely on Neo technology, a magnetic motor brake with 32 neodymium magnets and a virtual flywheel, to level up indoor cycling training. The brake unit can simulate surfaces, inclines and descents. Surfaces such as cobblestones, gravel or wooden planks are simulated by individually controlling the neodymium magnets of the brake unit during the ride. Thanks to the magnetic brake unit, there is no need for a belt, which has two advantages:
The Tacx Neo 3M from Garmin simulates inclines of up to 25 per cent. The inertia is dynamically adjusted depending on the rider's weight, speed and incline. The manufacturer promises a measurement accuracy of < 1 per cent. Compared to the Neo 2T, it has been improved and has a wider power spectrum. A maximum of 2200 watts is possible with the Smart Trainer.
But now to the really exciting and new part: Integrated motion plates. Anyone who has ever ridden an indoor bike knows that the static sitting position compared to outdoor cycling can cause pain in the seat area or back problems. That's why various manufacturers are trying to bring a little more freedom to indoor cycling training. With the new Tacx Smart Trainer, the integrated motion plates enable a longitudinal movement forwards and backwards. The lateral mobility of the trainer has also been improved. In particular, this makes riding in an upright position more comfortable and makes it feel more natural. We have seen similar concepts from other manufacturers: The Wahoo Kickr Move aims to create a more natural riding experience with more movement. Test editor Robert Kühnen describes it as followsThis pinch of freedom improves the seating experience considerably, making driving feel much more natural.
The motion plates are not the only new feature on the Tacx Neo 3M compared to the Tacx Neo 2T. The feet have become larger and an integrated carrying handle makes it easier to store the Smart Trainer or place it elsewhere. In addition, the stop sockets that hold the bike frame have been revised. This should make it easier to mount bikes with a thru axle or quick release. An integrated LED indicates how much power is being applied to the pedals.
Unpack and you're ready to go. Well, at least as soon as the bike is mounted on the trainer. A practical feature is that an 11-speed cassette is pre-installed - compatible with Shimano and Sram. An additional freehub body is also possible - for an extra charge. The Tacx Training App guides you through your first steps with the new Smart Trainer. Practical: the Tacx Neo 3M does not need to be calibrated.
The Tacx Smart network adapter is available as an option and ensures a more stable transmission to the training software, which is particularly exciting for virtual races or unstable WLAN connections.
When you buy the Tacx Neo 3M, you get a free premium subscription to the Tacx Training app for three months. The app can be used to synchronise training plans in the Garmin Connect calendar. You can take part in virtual group rides or training rides with World Tour pros. The routes and landscapes are realistically designed, so you can travel to routes and locations all over the world without leaving your home.
