The tour for professional cyclists starts with the prologue in St. Wendel in Saarland on 23 August, according to the organisers. A technically demanding circuit through St. Wendel will demand everything from the 120 pros right at the start. The first stage of the UCI ProSeries race - the race series below the WorldTour - will then lead from St. Wendel all the way through the mountainous north of Saarland to Merzig on 24 August 2023, where a Deutschland Tour stage already ended in 2018. At that time, Matej Mohoric came out on top in the sprint of a leading group just ahead of Nils Politt and laid the foundation for his subsequent overall victory.
"I'm delighted that the Deutschland Tour is spending more time in Saarland this year. We experienced the great enthusiasm along the route at the first edition of the new Deutschland Tour four years ago. Now we are organising two whole days that will delight the fans and challenge the professionals. I am certain that Saarland will leave its mark on the Deutschland Tour 2023," says Matthias Pietsch, Managing Director of the tour organisation.
Further stage locations for the Deutschland Tour 2023 planned from 23 to 27 August are to be announced in the coming weeks. According to the organisers, the traditional cycling race attracts more than 500,000 fans to the routes every year and more than five million people at home in Germany.
