The number of registrations for the Kitzbühel Cycle Marathon 2026 has reached a new level. For the first time, 1800 starting places are available, of which 1500 have already been allocated. The field of participants is made up of riders from numerous nations. Late entries on the day of the event are not planned.
The route starts in the centre of Kitzbühel and leads over the Thurn Pass into the Pinzgau region. From there, the route continues along the Gerlos main road with views of the Großvenediger before the old Gerlos Alpine road climbs steeply. After the second pass, the journey continues through the Zillertal valley to the Kerschbaumer Sattel, which winds its way into the Alpbachtal valley on a narrow road. Via Brixlegg and Kramsach, the route loops over Brandenberg, leads to Angerberg and through the Brixental valley back to Kitzbühel.
At the finish, the course splits into two variants. The Kitz variant ends in Vorderstadt after 209 kilometres and 3800 metres of altitude. The classic variant leads to the Alpenhaus on the Kitzbüheler Horn and measures 216 kilometres with 4600 metres of altitude. The entry fee is currently 159 euros.
The Kitzbühel Cycle Marathon is organised by the RC Sportunion Marathon. Organising committee head Franz Steinberger is satisfied with the early demand. According to him, the international composition of the starting field and the fact that so many people have travelled to the event because of the route are proof of the event's appeal. The mixture of sporting challenge and community characterises the character of the cycle marathon.
A tough decision awaits at the end of the bike marathon: those who take on the final climb have to climb an additional 800 metres in altitude. The Kitzbüheler Horn (1996 m) is considered one of the toughest and steepest road bike climbs in Austria. The famous toll road is 10.1 km long and covers around 1250 metres in altitude over this short distance. The average gradient is an extreme 12.4 per cent, with peaks of up to 22 per cent. There is a special classification for the ascent to the Kitzbüheler Horn.
