Two-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar needs surgery after a crash in the spring classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège and may have to take several weeks off.

The 24-year-old Slovenian suffered a scaphoid fracture in his left hand in a fall after 84 kilometres on Sunday. Pogacar underwent surgery in Genk on Sunday afternoon. This was announced by his team UAE.

Apparently the Dane Mikkel Honoré caused the crash after a puncture. There are no TV images of the incident. Pogacar, who had won the 2021 race, had gone into the classic as the top favourite. With a victory, the 24-year-old would have completed his Ardennes triple after winning the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday and the Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday.
