Rare winning pose: Jonas Vingegaard cheers in Uchon with braces over his jersey
Braces instead of a water carrier: Jonas Vingegaard made an unusual appearance out of necessity in his one-day victory at Paris-Nice. He wore his trousers over his jersey - a fashionable sin in cycling

It was a sight that made cycling fashionistas furious: Jonas Vingegaard won the 4th stage of Paris-Nice - with an appearance that is considered a real fashion sin among cyclists: he wore braces over his jersey as he crossed the finish line. The Danish winner of the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France had dressed particularly warmly in bad weather. After taking off his rain jacket for the finale, but with no time to stop in a four-man lead group with three professionals from the Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team, his braces flapped in the wind. In his haste and to maximise his chances of victory, he pulled the black braces of his long cycling shorts over the bright yellow jersey of his team Visma-Lease a bike. This is considered a serious offence in any cyclist's style guide. In professional cycling, it also conceals sponsor logos and makes the cyclist less streamlined.

Victory or style?

On the final climb to Uchon, he outsprinted his remaining opponents with his trousers inflated by the wind. "Maybe you can call me a trendsetter," said Vingegaard with a laugh during the winner's interview. Such an appearance by a winner in a professional race with his braces over his jersey is probably extremely rare. Rolf Aldag, who commented on the race as an expert on the Eurosport channel: "I think many amateur cyclists attach more importance to their appearance than some professionals." In terrible weather with many crashes and challenges, the day's winner provided plenty of reasons to laugh.
