Astana team parts ways with Miguel Angel Lopez for good

The team had seen no other option than to terminate the contract with immediate effect, the team announced.

The racing team had received new evidence that showed a connection between Lopez and the controversial doctor Marcos Maynar. The Spaniard was arrested on 11 May for drug trafficking and money laundering and denied the allegations at the time. He is accused of dealing in doping substances. Professional cyclist Lopez was suspended in July after being questioned and searched by police at Madrid airport. He was subsequently released.

Lopez is considered a climbing specialist and a good cyclist. He finished third overall in both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta in 2018 and came sixth in the Tour de France two years ago. Last year, he re-signed with the Kazakh team, having already worked there between 2015 and 2020.
