Professional cyclist Michel Hessmann's B sample the positive doping test confirmed. This was announced by the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) in response to a dpa enquiry. No more can be said at this time, as the proceedings are still ongoing, said a spokeswoman.
Hessmann's lawyer Rainer Cherkeh referred to his previous statement that there was no misuse of a diuretic. "According to the current investigation results and findings from other diuretic cases, everything speaks in favour of contamination," he told the German Press Agency.
Heßmann tested positive for a diuretic during a training test in Germany on 14 June. The medication stimulates urine production and thus dehydrates the body. He was suspended from his team Jumbo-Visma in August after the case came to light. The team spokesperson did not respond to an enquiry about the new development.
In mid-August, a search was carried out at Hessmann's home in the Freiburg area. Officers from the Baden-Württemberg State Office of Criminal Investigation seized data storage media, but no doping substances were found.
Heßmann made his Grand Tour debut at the Giro d'Italia this year after becoming European champion with the mixed relay team in 2020. Hessmann still has a contract with Jumbo-Visma until 2024.
