The 23-year-old Belgian prevailed after 230.8 kilometres on Saturday, beating Spaniard Pello Bilbao in the final sprint with clever tactics and a high final speed. Evenepoel had not only won the one-day event in Spain last year, but also in 2019. Third place went to the Russian Alexander Vlasov from the German team Bora-hansgrohe.
Evenepoel had previously decided not to take part in the Tour de France. The Belgian had dropped out of this year's Giro d'Italia after finishing in first place because he tested positive for coronavirus. He is being touted as a major challenger to Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar for the coming Tour years. He already won the Tour of Spain Vuelta in 2022.
