This was the result of the analysis of surveillance videos at the crime scene, witness interviews and further investigations, according to the Vicenza public prosecutor's office. According to the statement, the 62-year-old man, who works for a haulage company from North Rhine-Westphalia, was also found thanks to cooperation with the German police.
Charges were brought against the driver of the articulated lorry who, according to prosecutors, had left the scene of the accident after the collision and returned to Germany. However, he could not be arrested in his home country because the Italian offence of so-called homicide in road traffic ("omicidio stradale") is not similar in Germany, the media reported. The authorities are also investigating a hit-and-run offence following a road traffic collision.
The 51-year-old Rebellin, who used to ride for the German elite racing team Gerolsteiner and only ended his long professional career a few weeks ago, was hit by the articulated lorry at a roundabout on Wednesday morning. He died at the scene of the accident in the municipality of Montebello Vicentino.
The public prosecutor's office has now published further details: according to eyewitnesses, the German got out of the lorry after the accident and approached Rebellin, who was lying on the road. However, he then immediately got back into the cab of the articulated lorry and drove off. He was photographed by passers-by - the carabinieri were able to track the man down using these images.
It was also announced that the German lorry driver had been convicted of hit-and-run by a court in Foggia in southern Italy in 2001. In addition, his driving licence was confiscated by the police in Chieti in the central Italian region of Abruzzo in 2014 for drunk driving.
