Top German racing team Bora-Hansgrohe has signed cycling star Primoz Roglic and is aiming to win next year's Tour de France.
Team boss Ralph Denk confirmed the transfer of the 33-year-old Slovenian, who previously rode for Team Jumbo-Visma. With the former ski jumper, the racing team from Raubling in Bavaria can seriously compete for overall victory in the 2024 Tour. The route will be presented on 25 October.
"We've seen in this year's grand tours that we're missing something. Primoz can close this gap. We can put together a great team for him," said Denk. He did not specify the duration of the contract and Roglic is not bringing any other riders with him. However, an agreement with his coach Marc Lamberts is in the offing. "We were able to finance the deal from reserves and equity. It wasn't necessary for a sponsor to increase," said Denk. However, the fixed deposit account has now melted considerably.
In his team Jumbo-Visma, Roglic had fallen behind Jonas Vingegaard, who won the Tour for the second time this year. When he had to bow to the team order at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana and let the US American Sepp Kuss win, the veteran's dissatisfaction grew.
"He was no longer happy in the constellation at Jumbo," said Denk. At Bora, he has first-class helpers in the mountains in Jai Hindley, Dani Martinez, Aleksandr Vlasov and Emanuel Buchmann.
Alongside Vingegaard and his compatriot Tadej Pogacar, Roglic is currently the best cyclist in the world. In 2020, he came close to winning the most important race in the world, but was caught by Pogacar on the penultimate stage. He won the Tour of Spain three times and the Giro d'Italia for the first time this year.
