Giro d'Italia winner Primoz Roglic is apparently about to switch to the German cycling team Bora-hansgrohe. This was reported by the Italian sports daily "Gazzetta dello Sport".
The 33-year-old Slovenian recently announced his departure from the Dutch Jumbo-Visma racing team. He is said to have been unhappy with his role in the team for a long time.
With Roglic, the Bora team would be getting one of the best cyclists in the world. The former ski jumper won the Vuelta three times and the Giro for the first time this year. Roglic came very close to overall victory at the Tour de France in 2020 before compatriot Tadej Pogacar narrowly snatched the yellow jersey from him in the final individual time trial.
Bora-hansgrohe sports director Rolf Aldag told "radsport-news.com" on the sidelines of the Münsterland Giro that he had not been able to follow everything over the past few days for personal reasons and referred to the management of the racing team. Team boss Ralph Denk was initially unavailable.
Bora-hansgrohe has been working for years to build a strong team for the grand tours. Australian Jai Hindley also won the Giro in 2022, but missed out on the podium at the Tour this year. That could happen with Roglic. The Slovenian had to forgo a start in the Tour of France this year because everything at Jumbo is focussed on the two-time Danish winner Jonas Vingegaard.
There could be a big shake-up in cycling this year if the merger of the two top racing teams Jumbo-Visma and Soudal-Quick Step actually goes ahead. Jumbo currently has 27 riders under contract for the coming year, while Soudal would have 23 professionals. The maximum team size is 30 riders.
