The disqualification of the Colombian at this year's Tour de France remains in place. The International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the climbing specialist's appeal on Thursday. As a result, Quintana loses his sixth place overall.
In two dried blood samples taken from the 32-year-old on 8 and 13 July the opiate tramadol was detected. According to the UCI, this is not a doping offence, but a violation of the federation's medical rules. Tramadol has been banned by the UCI since 1 March due to its side effects, but is not on the World Anti-Doping Agency Wada's list of banned substances. As part of a programme to detect tramadol, 120 so-called dried blood samples were taken during the Tour.
Quintana has now also announced his departure from the French team Arkea-Samsic. It is not yet known whether and where the two-time Tour runner-up will continue to ride. The offence did not result in a ban.
