A few hours earlier, the Belgian from Soudal - Quick Step won the ninth stage and reclaimed the overall leader's pink jersey. Evenepoel was 45 seconds ahead of the Brit Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers). The 23-year-old's retirement means that Bremen's Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) moved up to eighth place.
"As part of our team's routine, I underwent a test, which was unfortunately positive. I was looking forward to riding here over the next two weeks," said Remco Evenepoel.
It is the fifth corona case of the current Giro, and even before the race some riders had already decided not to start after a positive test. Monday is the first rest day.
