Jonas Vingegaard has won the Tour de France. We take a look at the reactions of the international press.

Denmark

Policies: "If this wasn't the greatest Danish sporting achievement ever, it at least comes very close. Jonas Vingegaard's victory at the Tour de France puts him on a par with the men's national football team's European Championship triumph in 1992 and Caroline Wozniacki, the only Danish woman to date to win a Grand Slam tournament and also be number one in the world tennis rankings. Her achievement therefore has a historic dimension. In this respect, Vingegaard follows a good quarter of a century after Bjarne Riis, who despite his admitted doping past is still listed as the first Danish winner of the Tour de France."

Ekstra Bladet: "The Tour de France 2022 is not just yellow. In a way, it's also red and white. On Sunday, thousands of cycling-loving Danes travelled to Paris to catch a glimpse of Jonas Vingegaard and celebrate only the second Danish Tour winner in history. Most of the battle cries on the Champs-Élysées included Vingegaard's name, and with beer in hand and a smile on their lips, Danish fans gathered for an event that we as a nation have not experienced for 26 years - not since 1996."

"All of Denmark infected with yellow fever"

B.T.: "That was the best Tour de France ever. The Danish boys have delivered what nobody thought was possible. Jonas Vingegaard's commanding victory and the four Danish stage wins in total will never be forgotten. We have witnessed one of the greatest performances in Danish sporting history. The greatest of the millennium! Jonas Vingegaard has infected the whole of Denmark with yellow fever. He united the nation around a sport that is only now being allowed back into the lives of many people. He has wiped away the doping shadow of the 1990s. He has given Denmark an unforgettable gift."

Berlingske: "The Tour de France 2022 has become the Tour of the bold, innovative and unpredictable. We are used to the drama that comes with the three-week spectacle in July. But rarely, and in reality probably never, have we seen a Tour so entertaining and so difficult to predict. Tak for tours (thanks for the tour), Jonas. And an equally big thank you to Mads P., Cort, van Aert, Pogacar and the rest of the riders."

"A dream in yellow and red and white"

Jyllands-Posten: "The Tour de France was exactly what we needed in a time of war and crisis. A dream in yellow and red and white, and a fantastic Jonas Vingegaard as Tourminator. Unfortunately, doubt still rides along. It can't be any different after all that cycling has been through and done to itself. This is not due to the likeable Jonas Vingegaard from Glyngøre or all the other Danish and foreign riders in today's field. The most recent genuine doping scandal in cycling was a long time ago, but the shadows of the past are long. The fact that Vingegaard has just secured his victory on the Hautacam in the Pyrenees shows this heavy burden: how famous it was right there that Bjarne Riis rode home in yellow in 1996 and triggered a similar national frenzy as today. The hangover came when Riis admitted his doping abuse many years later."

Great Britain

The Guardian: "Jonas Vingegaard takes the glory of the Tour de France and takes away Pogacar's aura of invincibility."

The Sun: "Jonas Vingegaard won the Tour de France - just five years after working as a packer in a fish factory. The 25-year-old Dane went to the factory in the morning and got on his bike in the afternoon to train. Now he is a Tour winner - and has etched his name in the history books of cycling."

The Telegraph: "While Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard deservedly took centre stage in his maillot jaune after beating the previously unbeatable Tadej Pogacar in three fantastic weeks of racing, Thomas cut a rather inconspicuous figure. He took his two-year-old son Macs onto the podium to share the moment with him before returning to the team bus for a few drinks."

Spain

Marca: "The Dane from humble origins, who was second last year, takes his first triumph after a great performance by Jumbo Visma."

Mundo Deportivo: "Vingegaard, who was second last year, quickly made his ambition clear this year when he wore yellow after the eleventh stage on the Col du Granon. He said that he was out to win, that he already knew what it was like to be second and that he wanted to be on top of the podium in Paris and savour the glory. No sooner said than done!"

France

Le Figaro: "Denmark was the strong and moving red (and white) thread of the Tour de France."

Austria

Courier: "All for one: Vingegaard wins the Tour thanks to team spirit"
