Consequences of a crash: European champion Jakobsen retires from the Tour

The sprinter is still suffering from the consequences of a crash on the fourth stage. "At this point, it seems impossible for me to reach Paris. I simply can't regenerate. My body is not recovering from the crash," said the 26-year-old. Jakobsen had won a stage at the Tour last year.

Over the next few days, the Dutchman might have fallen outside the time limit. The Tour de France is travelling in the mountains up to and including Wednesday. Jakobsen already had to fight to stay in the race in the Pyrenees. It was the last Tour for the Belgian team for the fast man. Jakobsen had recently announced that he was leaving QuickStep-Soudal. The DSM team around John Degenkolb is being discussed as his new employer.
