The 20-year-old from Team DSM finished tenth after 158 kilometres around Chambon-sur-Lac, while Frenchman Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) ahead of Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) and Rune Herregodts (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty). The latter was part of a breakaway group and was only overtaken by the approaching Laporte in the final metres.
Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), who wants to recommend himself for a place in the most important race of the season in the traditional Tour de France preparation race, already lost 20 seconds on the hilly section.
Climbing skills are also required on Monday. At the end of the 167.3 kilometres from Brassac-les-Mines to La Chaise-Dieu, there is a four-kilometre climb at an altitude of over 1000 metres. The stage race, in which Tour defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is taking part, ends on Sunday in Grenoble. You can read a detailed preview of stage 2 here.
