Valentin Ferron setzte sich in Gap als Ausreißer durch.

Valentin Ferron won the sixth stage of the 74th Critérium du Dauphiné from a leading group.

Ferron dupes fellow escapees

The 24-year-old Frenchman from the TotalEnergies team was able to secure victory after 196.5 kilometres from Rives in the well-known Tour-de-France-He won the first stage in Gap ahead of his two compatriots Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels - KTM) and Warren Barguil from Team Arkea-Samsic.

Ferron outwitted his fellow escapees with an attack shortly after the Flamme Rouge on the last kilometre and saved a narrow lead to the finish.

Van Aert keeps yellow jersey

The overall leader's yellow jersey was defended by Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), who crossed the finish line with the peloton 32 seconds after the day's winner Ferron.

The two-time stage winner leads by 63 seconds ahead of Mattia Cattaneo from Italy and by 66 seconds over his Slovenian Jumbo-Visma team-mate Primoz Roglic.

Two Tour de France mountains on Saturday

The seventh stage on Saturday takes the riders back to familiar Tour terrain three weeks before the start of the Tour of France. The penultimate stage, 134.8 kilometres from Saint-Chaffrey to Vaujany, includes the 2642-metre-high Col du Galibier and the 2067-metre-high Col de la Croix de Fer.

The highly competitive World Tour race through south-east France ends on Sunday 12 June, when the Tour de Suisse also starts. All information about the route, the stage profiles, the regulations and the start list for the Tour of Switzerland can be found here.

The Tour of the Dauphiné and the Tour de Suisse traditionally serve as the last test for many riders before the Tour de France, which begins this year on 1 July in Denmark's capital Copenhagen starts.
