Criterium du Dauphine: Wout Van Aert chases down stage win

Belgian cycling star Wout Van Aert celebrated too early at the Tour of the Dauphine and missed out on his second stage win.

Gaudu outsprints Van Aert

Van Aert raised his arms shortly before the finish of the third stage over 169 kilometres from Saint-Paulien to Chastreix-Sancy, but the Frenchman David Gaudu passed him.

At least van Aert, who had won the first section, replaced the Frenchman Alexis Vuillermoz at the top of the overall standings again. Vuillermoz dropped back on the climb towards the finish.

The German riders were unable to intervene in the decision. Veteran Simon Geschke was 42 seconds behind at the day's finish, Nils Politt around three minutes late.

The highly competitive, demanding race continues until next Sunday (12 June). The Dauphine Tour traditionally serves as preparation for the Tour de Francewhich begins this year on 1 July in the Danish capital Copenhagen.
