"I had my own experiences as a professional: there was a time when I doubted cycling and its structures. But that has changed: I assume that there is no longer widespread doping in any team today," he told the "Stuttgarter Zeitung" and the "Stuttgarter Nachrichten".
Cycling has done a lot for its credibility, "much more than other sports," said the sporting director of the Tour of Germanywhich starts this Wednesday in Weimar. There are stricter rules and voluntary commitments. "I'm not so presumptuous as to say that cycling is 100 per cent clean," said Wegmann. "But it currently has one of the tightest, most intelligent control systems there is."
Cycling has worked hard to regain more trust. "If there are exorbitant performances, that has to be scrutinised," said the 42-year-old. "But fundamentally doubting everything is not an option."
