The 62nd edition of the German spring classic Eschborn-Frankfurt once again ended in a sprint decision by a decimated field. After 198.7 kilometres, Michael Matthews (Jayco - AlUla) took the victory. Second place in front of the Alte Oper in Frankfurt went to Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility) ahead of Jon Barrenetxea (Team Movistar). The best German rider was Nico Denz (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) finished in ninth place. Team-mate Frederik Wandahl took fifth place for the German racing team.
For Matthews, it was his first success in Frankfurt in his seventh participation - in previous years he had already finished second and third in the race. The Norwegian team Uno-X Mobility took the final sprint for Cort, but Matthews proved to be the stronger sprinter in the final 200 metres.
"This race has been my favourite for years. I really enjoy it and will be back next year to defend my title," said Matthews in the winner's interview.
This year's Hessian classic once again featured the familiar difficulties through the Taunus: the riders had to climb the Feldberg twice and the steep ascent to the Mammolhainer Berg three times - each time in ideal weather conditions and watched by numerous spectators. Accordingly, the day's programme included around 2000 metres of climbing. Among others, Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal - Quick-Step) was active on the climbs in the final phase and was part of a three-man lead group at times. However, this escape came to an end 17 kilometres before the finish.

At the start in Eschborn, the leading group of the day was quickly formed by Laurence Pithie (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe) and Pierre Thierry (Arkea - B&B Hotels). During the first two hours of the race, the duo gained a maximum lead of over six minutes on the field.
Meanwhile, Thierry proved to be the stronger climber from the breakaway duo, as Pithie was no longer able to follow his companion on the first ascent of the Mammolhain mountain after around 80 kilometres. The Frenchman then continued his escape as a soloist - but was also caught up again 97 kilometres before the finish.
The first selection in the peloton occurred on the second crossing of the Feldberg 80 kilometres before the finish, after which the peloton was thinned out to around 50 riders. Among others, Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates - XRG) and Georg Zimmermann (Intermarché - Wanty) as well as Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin - Deceuninck) lost the connection there.
The final climb of the day was the third ascent of the Mammolhain climb (2.4 kilometres long, 7.4 per cent average gradient), where Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal - Quick-Step) attacked from the group and was guided uphill by Gregor Mühlberger (Team Movistar) and Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility). However, 17 kilometres before the finish, the 30-strong chasing group caught up with Schachmann's group again. The group then stayed together for the final sprint in Frankfurt.
