"26 times gold, 20 times silver and 14 times bronze - that is a truly outstanding tally of 60 medals in total at these European Championships," said deputy government spokesperson Wolfgang Büchner. This deserves express appreciation. "A big thank you to all the athletes for this wonderful summer of sport and to the city of Munich for organising these games so well."
"The atmosphere in the sports city of Munich, the images of the full Olympic Park and the Olympic Stadium and the enthusiasm of the audience were broadcast to the world," Büchner continued. Anyone who watched the competitions live on site or on television "was simply gripped by the enthusiasm for sport".
When asked whether the German government would now be in favour of bringing the Olympic Games to Germany once again, a spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of the Interior said that the European Championships had shown the enthusiasm that major sporting events could generate in Germany. "We naturally support the prospect of a German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany." This would require the early and transparent continuous involvement of the population. Initial talks are currently being held with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
