Former Tour winner Ullrich as guest at German championships

Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich watched the German championships as a spectator. Several pictures on the former professional cyclist's Instagram account showed the 49-year-old with his former Telekom team-mate Erik Zabel, among others.

In recent years, Ullrich had held back with public appearances. On Sunday, the national championships were held in Donaueschingen and Bad Dürrheim in the Black Forest. Ulrich had won the road title there for the second time in 2001.

26 years ago, Ullrich was the only German to win the most important cycling race in the world and triggered a cycling boom in Germany. The career of the multiple world champion came to an abrupt end in 2006 after his connection to doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes became public. He was later banned by the International Court of Arbitration for Sport Cas for this offence.
