The experienced Brit was not in the line-up of his team Israel - Premier Tech for the five-day stage race, which started with a prologue. The organisers' list of participants was provisional. There were therefore no particular reasons for his absence, as the racing team announced in response to a dpa enquiry.
Last year's winner and this year's third place finisher in the Tour de France, Adam Yates, also did not start. This means that two of the most high-profile starters announced for the Deutschland Tour are not taking part. Former world champion Mads Pedersen, who only won the Hamburg Cyclassics on Sunday, is taking part. On the German side, Nils Politt, Maximilian Schachmann, Pascal Ackermann and Georg Zimmermann, among others, will be on their bikes.
