Defending champion Primoz Roglic launched his attack on the overall lead at the end of the second week of the 77th Tour of Spain and kept his chance of a fourth consecutive Vuelta victory alive.
The Slovenian took almost a minute off the classement leader Remco Evenepoel on the 14th stage and is now only 1:49 minutes behind. Eight seconds behind the day's winner Richard Carapaz, Roglic finished third on the mountain arrival at an altitude of 1815 metres on the Sierra de La Pandera. The Belgian Evenepoel finished eighth after 160.3 kilometres.
Olympic champion Carapaz from Ecuador celebrated his second stage win in three days. He had broken away around 90 kilometres from the finish and saved his lead from the Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez and Roglic, who were tied in time.
There will be another mountain finish on the 15th stage on Sunday. After 153 kilometres from Martos, the stage ends at an altitude of 252 metres on the Hoya de la Mora in the Sierra Nevada. The climb is almost 20 kilometres long. It covers 1000 metres in altitude.
