Top favourite Primoz Roglic has claimed overall victory in the 2023 Tour of Catalonia.

The Slovenian cycling star from Jumbo-Visma after the final stage in Barcelona was six seconds ahead of road world champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) and thus won his second round trip on this year's World Tour.

Evenepoel wins stage 7 of the Tour of Catalonia 2023

Evenepoel took the stage win on the seventh and final stage after 136 kilometres in the Catalan metropolis, but Roglic also secured bonus seconds in second place and thus maintained first place overall.

The peloton of riders had halved considerably by the end, and Roglic was able to parry the expected attacks by the Belgian in the final kilometres. Evenepoel was no longer able to decisively overtake the Slovenian. Roglic went into the final stage with a ten-second lead.

Roglic and Evenepoel top favourites at the Giro d'Italia

Roglic, who finished first in the Tirreno-Adriatico in mid-March, successfully defended the overall leader's jersey on the sixth and penultimate stage on Saturday and fended off Evenepoel's attack. For both riders, the tour was an important test before the Giro d'Italia in May, where both are among the top contenders for overall victory.
