Rüdiger Selig is to help cycling star Mark Cavendish set the sole stage record at the Tour de France. The 34-year-old will ride for Team Astana in the coming season and is intended to be the rider for the British sprinter.
Cavendish has won 34 stages in the Tour, the same number as Eddy Merckx. Next year, he wants to become the sole record holder with his 35th success. Selig is also expected to help the talented Max Kanter with his experience.
"I believe that together with the best riders in the world, Michael Mörkov and Cees Bol, we can become an excellent team for the legend Mark Cavendish and achieve great victories. We might even make history," said Selig. Team boss Alexander Vinokourov said: "Selig is an experienced and fast rider who has worked with famous sprinters and classics specialists. With his signing, our sprint group is complete."
Cavendish actually wanted to end his career this year and win his 35th Tour stage beforehand. However, the 38-year-old crashed on the eighth stage and broke his collarbone. The day before, he had come closest to winning a stage in Bordeaux in second place. A few weeks ago, Cavendish announced that he would be extending his career for another season.
