Groves won the fifth stage over 186.2 kilometres from Morella to Burriana. Second and third place went to the Italian hour world record holder Filippo Ganna and the Belgian Dries van Gestel. No German riders made it into the top ten.

Meanwhile, Belgian time trial world champion and last year's winner Remco Evenepoel has extended his lead in the overall standings. The young star surprised the competition by taking six bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint. Evenepoel is now eleven seconds ahead of the Spaniard Enric Mas. The Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard is 37 seconds back in fourth place.
