Der Belgier Remco Evenepoel fährt weiter im Roten Trikot des Führenden der Gesamtwertung.
The German professional cyclist Marco Brenner missed out on the first German one-day victory at this year's Tour of Spain, but put in a strong performance with fifth place on the twelfth stage.

Carapaz wins stage 12

After almost 193 kilometres from Salobreña up to Penas Blancas, Olympic champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador won solo. Dutchman Wilco Kelderman from the German racing team Bora-hansgrohe came second ahead of Spaniard Marc Soler. Brenner reached the finish line 34 seconds after the winner Carapaz, who won a Vuelta stage for the first time. The 20-year-old Brenner rides for the Dutch team DSM.

In the overall standings, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel defended the red jersey of the leader. Evenepoel is still 2:41 minutes ahead of last year's winner Primoz Roglic from Slovenia, with the Spaniard Enric Mas in third, 3:03 minutes behind. The favourites crossed the finish line more than seven and a half minutes after the winner Carapaz.
