After almost 193 kilometres from Salobreña up to Penas Blancas, Olympic champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador won solo. Dutchman Wilco Kelderman from the German racing team Bora-hansgrohe came second ahead of Spaniard Marc Soler. Brenner reached the finish line 34 seconds after the winner Carapaz, who won a Vuelta stage for the first time. The 20-year-old Brenner rides for the Dutch team DSM.
In the overall standings, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel defended the red jersey of the leader. Evenepoel is still 2:41 minutes ahead of last year's winner Primoz Roglic from Slovenia, with the Spaniard Enric Mas in third, 3:03 minutes behind. The favourites crossed the finish line more than seven and a half minutes after the winner Carapaz.
