After 205.9 kilometres on the Schlossplatz in Münster, the 29-year-old finished third in the bunch sprint behind the Dutch winner Olav Kooij and the Belgian Jasper Philipsen.
The sprint stars Sam Bennett (Ireland), Fabio Jakobsen and Dylan Groenewegen (both Netherlands) followed in fifth to seventh place. However, two-time Giro d'Italia stage winner Pascal Ackermann had to end his hopes of victory a good five kilometres before the finish when he was held up by a crash.
"I waited all day for this sprint. In the end I had enough space. It's a good season for me," said the 20-year-old Kooij after his twelfth win of the season and emphasised: "It's nice to beat some of the world's best sprinters." A few years ago, Kooij was still one of the top talents in Dutch speed skating. In 2019, he was runner-up in the junior 3000 metres.
This year's race featured a high-calibre line-up. No fewer than ten WorldTour teams had lined up at the start in Telgte in the morning. After all, important points for the world rankings were at stake for some racing teams in the fight against relegation.
