The Norwegian outsider Per Strand Hagenes was apparently surprised himself by his victory at the 18th Münsterland Giro.
The 20-year-old from the Jumbo-Visma team soloed to victory after an attack a good two kilometres before the finish, but simply rode on after crossing the finish line. Apparently Hagenes was convinced that he had one more lap to go and therefore decided not to celebrate.
Behind the youngster, the Australian Kaden Groves and the Danish former world champion Mads Pedersen secured second and third place after 194.2 kilometres, 17 seconds behind a smaller group. The best German was Jonas Koch in tenth place. The ten-man group had broken away from the peloton 73 kilometres before the finish and thus prevented the expected bunch sprint.
In recent years, the race has often been decided in a sprint, with Marcel Kittel winning twice and André Greipel and John Degenkolb triumphing once each. The last German winner was Max Walscheid in 2018.
