Eleven years after his father's triumph in the Tour de France, Ben Wiggins has caused a sensation on the big cycling stage for the first time. The 18-year-old won the silver medal in the junior individual time trial on the road at the World Championships in Scotland on Friday.
Louis Leidert from Bensheim finished in third place directly behind Wiggins. Australian Oscar Chamberlain took the win after 22.8 kilometres in Stirling with a lead of 24 seconds.
It is Wiggins' first world championship medal. His father Bradley Wiggins made history in 2012 with the first British overall victory at the Tour de France. He then went on to win the individual time trial at the 2012 Olympic Games and took four more Olympic victories on the track.
Sometimes the big name is additional pressure, said Wiggins junior: "But I can't complain." He sees his strengths for the future in the classics and the time trial.
