Emanuel Buchmann was born in Ravensburg in 1992 and began his professional cycling career in 2012 with Team Specialised Concept Store. He rode for the Rad-net Rose Team in 2013 and 2014, before moving to Team Bora-Argon 18, now Team Bora-Hansgrohe, in 2015, for which he currently rides.
Buchmann has taken part in many major races, including the Tour de Francethe Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a Espana. The rider from Ravensburg is regarded as a specialist for major national tours and is an excellent climber. The German celebrated his greatest success at the Tour of France in 2019, when he finished fourth overall - the best result by a German since Andreas Klöden, who finished second in 2006. In 2019, Buchmann was third in the Criterium du Dauphine and the Tour of the Basque Country. He also finished seventh in the 2022 Giro d'Italia, which was won by his team-mate Jai Hindley. It was also the German racing team's first overall victory in a three-week national tour.
Emanuel Buchmann has also been successful in one-day races. In 2015, he secured the road race title at the German Championships ahead of Nikias Arndt. In 2023, he repeated this feat and took the German road champion's jersey for the second time after a long solo ride between Donaueschingen and Bad Dürrheim.
His greatest successes also include victories in the Trofeo Andratx (2019) and the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana (2020) as part of the Mallorca Challenge, a stage win in the 2019 Tour of the Basque Country and victory in the young rider classification at the 2017 Criterium du Dauphine.
However, Buchmann's career was also often thwarted by crashes and injuries. In 2020, for example, the stage race specialist crashed heavily at the Criterium du Dauphine, which significantly impaired his preparation for the subsequent Tour de France. In 2021, he was forced to end the Giro d'Italia prematurely in sixth place in the overall standings after a crash on stage 15.
Buchmann is also active on Strava. The German has more than 34,000 subscribers on the social media platform, which is very popular with cyclists. He regularly posts data from his training rides and races there.
