Kaden Groves: Australia's up-and-coming sprinter on the cycling circuit

From young talent to Vuelta stage winner

Kaden Groves has developed into one of the most promising sprinters in professional cycling in recent years. Born in 1998, the Australian celebrated his breakthrough in 2022 with a stage win at the Vuelta a España and went on to achieve further successes in Grand Tours in the following years. Groves has been riding for Team Alpecin-Deceuninck since 2023 and has established himself as one of the top sprinters in the peloton.

Kaden Groves was born on 23 December 1998 in Gympie, Australia. His career in professional cycling began in 2017 with the Australian Continental Team St George. In his first year as an U23 rider, Groves won a stage at the Tour of Fuzhou. In the following years, he gained further experience and success with various Continental teams before making the leap to the WorldTour with Team Mitchelton-Scott (now Team Jayco AlUla) in 2020.

The sprinter, who is 1.76 metres tall and weighs 76 kilograms, showed his talent for fast finishes early on. In his first years as a professional, Groves regularly won stages in smaller tours. However, his breakthrough at the highest level did not come until the 2022 season, when he celebrated his first WorldTour victory at the Tour of Catalunya.

First Grand Tour success and switch to Alpecin-Deceuninck

The highlight of Groves' career so far came at the 2022 Vuelta a España, where he won the bunch sprint on the eleventh stage and celebrated his first Grand Tour stage win. This success marked a turning point in his career and underlined his potential as a top sprinter in the world-class field.

Kaden Groves moved to the Belgian team Alpecin-Deceuninck for the 2023 season. The transfer proved to be a stroke of luck for both sides. In his new environment, the Australian was able to further develop his skills and consolidate his position in the peloton. He won two stages at the Tour of Catalonia in 2023, followed by a triumph at the Volta Limburg Classic.

Breakthrough at Grand Tours and establishment as a top sprinter

The next milestone in Groves' career came at the 2023 Giro d'Italia, where he sprinted to his first stage win in the Tour of Italy on the fifth stage. The Vuelta a España in the same year was even more successful for him. With three stage victories and winning the points classification, Groves impressively underlined his qualities as a sprinter and his ability to consistently deliver top performances over three weeks.

The 2024 season brought further success for Kaden Groves. Although he missed out on a stage win at the Giro d'Italia, he was able to prove his consistency with two second and two third places as well as second place in the points classification. At the Vuelta a España, he seamlessly built on his performances from the previous year. With victories on the second, 14th and 17th stages and another win in the points classification, Groves cemented his status as one of the best sprinters in the peloton.

Outlook for the future

It will be interesting to see whether Groves will also focus on the classics and one-day races in the coming years. A stage win at the Tour de France is also still on his to-do list to complete his Grand Tour stage hat-trick.

Kaden Groves has quickly developed into one of the most exciting sprinters in professional cycling. His ability to assert himself in hectic sprint finals and deliver top performances over three weeks in Grand Tours makes him a valuable asset for his team and a rider that the competition will certainly be keeping a close eye on in the future.
