Mads Pedersen has established himself as one of the most versatile cyclists of his generation. The Danish pro, who has been riding for Team Lidl-Trek since 2017, has already notched up numerous prestigious victories, including the 2019 world title and successes in classics such as Gent-Wevelgem. His strengths lie both in one-day races and Grand Tours, where he has won stage victories and points classifications.
Mads Pedersen, born on 18 December 1995 in Tølløse Sogn, Denmark, has developed into one of the most successful and versatile cyclists in the peloton in recent years. The 1.79 metre tall and 70 kilogramme Dane has been riding for Team Lidl-Trek (formerly Trek-Segafredo) in the UCI WorldTour since 2017. Pedersen attracted attention at a young age when he won the junior edition of Paris-Roubaix in 2013 and took the silver medal in the junior race at the Road World Championships. His breakthrough in the professional ranks came in 2018 with an impressive second place in the Tour of Flanders, where he rode in a leading group for a long time and was only overtaken by the eventual winner Niki Terpstra.
World championship title as a career highlight
The biggest success in Pedersen's career to date was undoubtedly winning the world road race title in Yorkshire in 2019. In difficult weather conditions, the then 23-year-old surprisingly beat Matteo Trentin and Stefan Küng in the sprint of a three-man lead group. This victory catapulted Pedersen into the absolute world elite of cycling and underlined his potential for one-day races in challenging conditions. In the years that followed, the Dane was able to prove that this success was no coincidence by claiming further prestigious victories.
Pedersen has established himself as a specialist for the spring classics. His victories at Gent-Wevelgem in 2020, 2024 and 2025 are particularly noteworthy, underlining his ability to prevail in tough one-day races and also keep the upper hand in the sprint of a small group. In addition to his Classics successes, Pedersen has also caused a stir in Grand Tours. He has won stages in all three major national tours - Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España. He was particularly successful at the 2022 Vuelta a España, where he not only won three stages but also took the points classification.
Mads Pedersen's versatility is evident not only in his victories in different types of races, but also in his ability to adapt to different racing scenarios. He can hold his own in breakaway groups as well as winning bunch sprint stages. His strength in time trials, which he has proven with victories in stage races such as the Tour of Denmark, rounds off his profile as an all-rounder. This versatility makes him a valuable team member who can be deployed in various roles.
In recent years, Mads Pedersen has shown remarkable consistency in his performances. His winning streak at Gent-Wevelgem and regular top placings in other cycling monuments such as the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix are testament to his continuous development. At the age of 29, Pedersen still has many years at the highest level ahead of him. His ability to adapt to different racing situations and make the most of his skills gives hope for further great successes in the future. As one of the lead riders in Team Lidl-Trek, he will continue to play a central role in the most important races of the year and will endeavour to add more prestigious victories to his palmarès.
