The Dutchman is a true all-rounder who is successful both on the road and off-road. In his junior years, van der Poel became world champion three times; twice in cyclocross and once on the road. His greatest successes include six titles at the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024. Van der Poel also took the rainbow jersey on the road. At the 2023 World Cycling Championships in Glasgow, the Dutchman triumphed despite a crash and was crowned the reigning cyclo-cross and road world champion. Van der Poel has also won the Milan-San Remo, Paris-Roubaix and Amstel Gold Race classics. Twice, in 2020 and 2022, van der Poel secured victory in the Tour of Flanders, which is one of the five monuments of cycling.
In addition to his two triumphs at the Tour of Flanders, he also won the semi-classic Dwars door Vlaanderen twice, in 2019 and 2022. At the 2022 Giro d'Italia, van der Poel won stage 1 in Budapest and wore the overall leader's pink jersey for two days. At the 2021 Tour de France, van der Poel even rode five days in the yellow jersey of the overall leader after winning stage 2.
In 2020, van der Poel became Dutch champion and also won his first stage race on the UCI World Tour at the Benelux Tour. In 2019, he secured the European Cross Country Championship title.
Van der Poel wants to remain active until at least 2029. On 18 March, it was announced that the Dutchman had extended his contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck until the end of 2028.
