Maximilian Schachmann was born in Berlin in 1994 and began his professional cycling career in 2013 with the Continental team ThĂĽringer Energie Team. Via the development team Giant-Shimano and AWT-Greenway, which was renamed Klein Constantia a year later, Schachmann then joined the World Tour team Quick-Step Floors, now Team Soudal Quick-Step, in 2017. He was initially under contract with the team for two years. Between 2019 and 2024, Schachmann rode for the German team Bora-Hansgrohe before rejoining Soudal Quick-Step for the 2025 season.
Schachmann feels particularly at home on hilly and mountainous terrain and is regarded as a good classics rider who can also win one-week tours. The Berliner has already taken part in all Grand Tours and has also competed in many cycling monuments. He celebrated one of his greatest successes with a stage win at the Giro d'Italia in the year 2018.
In 2018, Maximilian Schachmann celebrated his breakthrough when he won a stage of the Tour of Catalonia, stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia and stage 2 of the Deutschland Tour. At the World Championships, he also won gold in the team time trial with his Quick-Step Floors team led by Laurens de Plus, who is now competing at Ineos Grenadiers is under contract. In 2019, he finished third in the spring classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège, celebrated three stage wins in the Tour of the Basque Country and won the German championship title in the road race. In 2020 and 2021, he won the overall classification of the Paris-Nice long-distance race. Schachmann was also able to repeat the German road race championship in 2021.
Schachmann was repeatedly thwarted by injuries and illnesses. For example, the Berlin rider broke his right foot during the 2017 Tour of Poland, and in 2018 he had to bury his hopes of a top place in the overall classification at the Giro d'Italia due to respiratory problems. On the 13th stage of the Tour de France In 2019, he broke the metacarpal bone in his left hand and was unable to continue the tour. After a collision with a car during the 2020 Tour of Lombardy, Schachmann also broke his collarbone. In 2022, he then contracted Covid-19 twice and took a break.
