The rise of Biniam Girmay

Biniam Girmay's talent flashed for the first time in 2018 when he became triple African junior champion. Girmay won the road race, the individual time trial and the team time trial. At the 2018 UCI Road World Championships in Innsbruck, Girmay finished 13th in the junior road race and 15th in the time trial. At the age of just 18, Girmay finished 14th in the road race at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. The switch to the adult category brought Girmay great success: at the 2021 World Championships in Belgium, Girmay won the silver medal in the under-23 category, a first for an Eritrean who had never before won a world championship gold medal.

Victory at Gent-Wevelgem 2022

Further top placings followed in the 2022 season: Girmay won the Trofeo Alcudia as part of the Mallorca Challenge in a bunch sprint. At the E3 Saxo Bank Classic, he achieved his first top ten finish in a World Tour classic. In the end, he finished in fifth place. The exceptional talent was able to top this success shortly afterwards when he became the first ever professional cyclist from Africa to win a classic. At Gent-Wevelgem, Girmay put his rivals in their place as part of a breakaway group.

Mishap with Prosecco corks

This historic success earned Girmay cult status in his home country. The Eritrean's fame was further enhanced by a curious incident: at the Giro d'Italia 2022, he was the first Eritrean ever to win a stage. However, he was unable to compete in the 11th stage the following day as the cork from the Prosecco bottle flew into his left eye during the award ceremony. The result was a longer forced break for the African and the fact that since this accident, the winner's bottles have been served open.

Green jersey at the Tour de France

After a mixed year in 2023 with two victories - stage 1 of the Tour of Valencia and stage 2 of the Tour de Suisse - Girmay really took off again in 2024. At the Tour de France, the man from Eritrea won three stages and also secured the green jersey for the best points scorer. He then extended his contract with Intermarche-Wanty Long-term until the end of 2028.
