Remco Evenepoel: From football to cycling

Remco Evenepoel was initially active as a footballer in his youth before switching to cycling in 2017. He rode straight to his first successes in his junior years. Evenepoel became European Junior Road Race Champion in 2018. At the Junior World Championships in Innsbruck in the same year, he secured the time trial and road race titles. A year later, he became European champion in the individual time trial in Alkmaar - this time in the men's competition.

Overall victory at the Vuelta a Espana

His victory at Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2022 was his first triumph in one of cycling's five monuments. In 2023, he repeated this coup and defended his title at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. In 2022, Remco Evenepoel became world road race champion in Australia and won the overall classification of the Vuelta a Espana.

In 2023, Evenepoel took two stage wins at the Giro d'Italia, which he had to abandon prematurely due to illness. In July 2023, he celebrated his third triumph at the Clasica San Sebastian before taking his first world title in the individual time trial in Scotland. The Belgian then secured three stage wins at the Vuelta a Espana, but lost the race after a Collapse in the high mountains all chances of another overall victory.

Double gold for Remco Evenepoel at the 2024 Olympics in Paris

2024 Evenepoel was involved in a mass crash on stage 4 of the Tour of the Basque Country in April, in which he was also injured. Jonas Vingegaard seriously injured. In preparation for the 2025 season, Evenepoel was set back considerably at the beginning of December 2024 after he was injured in a collision with a Postal vehicle suffered a rib fracture, a shoulder blade fracture, a hand fracture, bruises in his lungs and a dislocation of his right collarbone, in which all the surrounding ligaments were torn. The Olympic champion is aiming for his comeback in the saddle in mid-April 2025.
