For Olympic champion Richard Carapaz, the Tour de France is already over after the first stage. The Ecuadorian had to abandon the race after a crash in which he broke his left kneecap, his team EF Education announced.
Carapaz and the Spaniard Enric Mas, who was also riding for the overall classification, crashed 22 kilometres before the finish. Mas gave up immediately with a broken shoulder blade and went to hospital. Carapaz reached the finish a long way behind and immediately underwent x-rays.
