The Tour de France Femmes came to a showdown in the Alps last weekend - and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney was right in the thick of it. Last year's winner of the German CANYON//SRAM team finished third overall after nine stages.
Niewiadoma-Phinney, who celebrated her wedding to former pro Taylor Phinney in addition to winning the 2024 Tour, tackled the two mountain stages on Saturday and Sunday on the Canyon Aeroad CFR. The main sponsor of the German racing team naturally provided its top rider with a model in a special colour scheme. The "Carina" colour option costs an additional 200 euros.
Her bike, which achieved 204 watts in the TOUR wind tunnel test and is therefore one of the fastest machines in the peloton, is fitted with the top SRAM Red AXS groupset. For the fourth stage from Saumur to Poitiers, the Polish rider combined a 50/37 crankset with a 10-36 cassette.
A special feature of the defending champion's Aeroad: the chain and sprocket set shine in gold. A special design that the US component specialist does not offer commercially. It is also striking that Niewiadoma rides with quick-release thru axles so that she or her team mechanics can remove the wheel quickly and without tools in the event of a puncture.
Niewiadoma-Phinney sits on a size XS carbon frame. Strictly speaking, she is riding a slightly longer frame than Canyon recommends for riders of her height (1.65 metres). According to our impressions from the paddock, the crank length of 165 millimetres corresponds to the average in the women's Tour field. The XS version comes from the factory with the next largest crank arm length (170 millimetres).
