The German Road Safety Council is calling for the drink-drive limit for cyclists to be lowered from 1.6 to 1.1 per mille. Between 2014 and 2024, the number of cyclists killed in the EU fell by eight per cent to 1,926, while in Germany it rose from 396 to 441. At the end of March 2026, the Bundestag's Transport Committee called on the German government to examine the introduction of a fine offence. Countries such as Austria, France and Switzerland already apply stricter rules.
