Ide Schelling took the second win of the season for the German cycling team Bora-hansgrohe at the 2023 Tour of the Basque Country.

The Dutch pro won the second stage over 193.8 kilometres from Viana to Leitza. It was the 25-year-old's second professional victory. Schelling took the lead in the overall standings, four seconds ahead of the Italian Matteo Sobrero. The tour, in which Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard is also competing, ends on Saturday after six stages in Eibar.

Criticism of the UCI

"It's a bit strange that the UCI authorised this final. It was pretty dangerous. I started my sprint 500 metres before the finish and knew that nobody would be able to get past with all the bends," said Schelling. The world organisation UCI provoked problems with the descent to the finish. The stage ended with an approximately four kilometre long and winding descent, in which the still quite large peloton reached well over 70 kilometres per hour.
