On the longest stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 (218 kilometres), Lennard Kämna from Bora-Hansgrohe a place in the first chasing group around the Italian Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers). The stage win was secured by Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma). Kämna is six seconds ahead of the Slovenian in the overall standings.
"I'm super happy to take over the overall classification," said Kämna and added with a view to the blue jersey: "It will be very, very difficult to defend it. This is a wonderful snapshot. I'm very happy to be able to wear it."
Roglic had the best legs on the final hill in the sprint of a small leading group and beat former world champion Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal - Quick Step) in second place. Kämna crossed the finish line a few seconds later. "I fought for myself and tried to lose as little time as possible. It was a full-throttle battle at the end," said the North German. The day did not go so well for Roglic's team-mate Wout van Aert. The Belgian crashed in the final together with Strade Bianche winner Thomas Pidcock. However, both were able to continue the race.
It will be difficult for Kämna to successfully defend his lead on Friday. The mountain top finish at 1451 metres above sea level in Sarnano-Sassotetto should suit him, but Roglic is the favourite. Kämna's team Bora-Hansgrohe also has two strong climbers at the start, the reigning Giro winner Jai Hindley and Aleksandr Vlasov, who are in sixth and seventh place in the overall standings.
