Arndt, on the other hand, had other ambitions on the final, almost 171-kilometre stage. But in the last bend 300 metres before the finish, Gaviria surprised him as well as the rest of the sprinters. The Colombian was the first to enter the sharp bend, then immediately took off and defended his position until after the finish line.
For Arndt, who was able to keep Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) at bay, only second place remained. "I really wanted to win," said Arndt via his team's channels. "I felt great and was fully committed. I told my team-mates halfway through the stage: 'Guys, today is our day. We're going to win."
But it wasn't quite enough for the German's first win of the season, although it was still his best result since last season's German Championships.
