In March and April, thousands of cyclists will once again be spending their racing bike holidays on Mallorca. If Spanish lawmakers have their way, it will be a little safer. Drivers must reduce their speed by 20 km/h when overtaking cyclists. If 90 km/h is actually permitted, overtaking is now only allowed at 70 km/h. In addition, a minimum distance of 1.5 metres must be maintained when overtaking.
If a car is driving behind a cyclist in a built-up area, a safety distance of five metres must be maintained. Rules have also been tightened for cyclists: helmets are always compulsory - even on long uphill climbs. In addition, reflective clothing must be worn when visibility is poor, for example at dusk, in rain or fog.
