The 30-year-old professional from Team Ineos-Grenadiers was able to win the third stage on Saturday as a soloist after 148.9 kilometres from Freiburg to the 1207 metre high mountain finish on the Schauinsland. He thus replaced the Italian Alberto Bettiol as overall leader.
Second on the day, 19 seconds behind Yates, was the Spaniard Pello Bilbao, followed by the Belgian Mauri Vansevenant. The best German was Georg Zimmermann from Augsburg in fifth place, 29 seconds behind Yates. Emanuel Buchmann had to break away on the final climb eight kilometres from the finish and crossed the line more than two minutes behind.
The Final stage on Sunday leads over 186.6 kilometres from Schiltach to Stuttgart. The professional cyclists will then have a total of 710.7 kilometres in their legs since the prologue on Wednesday in Weimar. Buchmann's Bora-Hansgrohe team-mate Nils Politt won the race last year.
