The battle for the red jersey was decided at the Vuelta a Espana in September, which was won by American Sepp Kuss. But there was also a German stage win on the roads of the Iberian peninsula. Lennard Kämna triumphed on stage 9 and completed his collection. After the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, the Bora-Hansgrohe pro has now also claimed a stage win at the Tour of Spain.
Jumbo-Visma dominates Vuelta a Espana 2023
On stage number 13, the Vuelta made a detour to the famous Col du Tourmalet in France. Co-favourite Remco Evenepoel suffered a serious collapse on this day and had to bury all hopes of defending his title. Jumbo-Visma, on the other hand, was all smiles. The Dutch team celebrated a triple victory with stage winner Jonas Vingegaard, second place by Sepp Kuss and third place by Primoz Roglic.
The dominance of Jumbo-Visma at the Vuelta took on frightening proportions for the competition. On the Altu de L'Angliru, Roglic, Kuss and Vingegaard once again rode their opponents into the ground and once again took the first three places.
In Madrid, the historic triple triumph was perfect. Sepp Kuss took the red jersey, ahead of Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic. The victory of the US-American Kuss meant that Jumbo-Visma won all three Grand Tours in 2023, after Roglic had previously won the Giro d'Italia and Vingegaard the Tour de France. No other team had ever achieved this feat before.
Stefan Küng's accident at the European Cycling Championships: Swiss covered in blood
After the first Super Cycling World Championships in Scotland in August, the European Championships in the Netherlands were on the programme in September. In addition to the road races, the time trials in particular provided plenty to discuss. After her disappointment at the World Championships, Switzerland's Marlen Reusser took the European title. There was also a Swiss medal in the men's individual time trial with silver for Stefan Bissegger. However, the individual time trial did not go well at all for Bissegger's compatriot Stefan Küng. The 29-year-old crashed shortly before the finish and ended the race covered in blood and with a broken helmet.
Team SD Worx successful at Simac Ladies Tour - Lippert wins in French-speaking Switzerland
The Simac Ladies Tour ran from 5 to 10 September and was dominated by two female riders: Lotte Kopecky and Lorena Wiebes from Team SD Worx. Kopecky won stages two and four as well as the overall classification, Wiebes the fifth stage.
Liane Lippert also stood at the top of the podium once in September. The 25-year-old German won the 3rd stage of the Tour de Romandie Feminin.
