The wind waistcoat should primarily protect you from the wind and wet; if it fits well and is equipped with nice details such as pockets or a soft collar, it will become a favourite item for many road cyclists. Our test of 22 models for men and women shows which ones have what it takes

The whirring of the freewheel, the steady noise of the wheels - these are sounds that road cyclists like. So do babbling brooks, rustling leaves and singing birds. The loud rattling of fabric next to your ears, on the other hand, is clearly a discordant sound. This always occurs on the shoulder sections of wind waistcoats when the lightweight material between the collar and sleeve hole has too little tension and therefore flaps like a sail in the wind. You may be able to tolerate this during a short, fast descent, but it is annoying in the long run. And as we discovered in this test, there are clear differences between the waistcoats - and indeed quiet and loud waistcoats. The differences in weather protection are significant. Whilst all waistcoats provide reliable protection from the wind and at least from moisture from the front, the situation is often different at the back.

The variety of waistcoats is huge - ranging from simple wind deflectors to technically complex waistcoats with all-round protection made from various functional materials that block the wind and rain while regulating perspiration transport to the outside. The price range is correspondingly wide, from 65 euros (Bontrager) to 160 euros (Biehler).
