Cycling manager Ralph Denk is concerned about young talent in German cycling and is calling for more support from politicians.

"It hurts my heart when I go to cycling races in our region, if there are any left at all. We don't even have a starting field of ten riders in the U17 or U15 categories. That's actually very, very sad," said Denk during the training camp of his Bora-Hansgrohe cycling team on Mallorca and said: "Politicians always want the gold medals at the Olympic Games. If you want them, you have to start at the bottom."

Hardly any races left in Germany

The main problem is that there are hardly any more races. A solution needs to be found with politicians, including a simplified authorisation procedure. "Cycling races in the junior sector are the basis for what we achieve in the professional sector. This must be changed," said Denk.

For German professional cycling, 2022 was the worst year since the turn of the millennium. In total, the German professional cyclists only achieved 29 victories. That's another 22 victories less than in 2021. In previous years, there were sometimes more than 100 victories per year.
