Matthew Brennan (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) has won the 5th stage of the Tour of Poland. The competition had no chance against the Brit's speed in the easy uphill finale. Ben Turner (INEOS Grenadiers) came second. The overall standings remained unchanged at the top.

38 riders crossed the finish line of the 206-kilometre stage from Katowice to Zakopane, which was a middle ground with two 1st category climbs and a not quite easy climb on the last kilometres, which, however, remained uncategorised: too difficult for the pure sprinters, but too easy to influence the overall standings.

As a result, it was the sprinters who can play to their strengths on the hills. And it was two Brits who decided the day's victory between themselves. Brennan, who turned 20 two days ago, celebrated his eleventh win of the season. Several bike lengths behind him came his compatriot Turner, who in turn also had a considerable lead over Andrea Bagioli (Lidl-Trek), who finished third on the day. The latter's team-mate Tim Torn Teutenberg had saved himself with the large group over the last climb, but he was no longer able to intervene in the finale.

Brennan cheers for the eleventh time

In addition to Brennan, Olav Kooij had already won for Visma at the start of the Tour of Poland. Both of the team's sprinters were successful. "But we are still hungry for more victories," said Brennan. "I came here to win a stage. I'm happy about that, and also that I was able to crown the team's hard work today." It was his eleventh win of the season.

Meanwhile, Paul Lapeira (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) also reached the finish with the group and thus confidently defended the yellow jersey. Victor Langellotti (INEOS Grenadiers) is still second, eight seconds behind Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates), who tried to prevent the sprint with an attack in the final kilometres, but it didn't work.

While Turner defended his lead in the points classification, Timo Kielich (Alpecin-Deceuninck) remains in the mountains jersey.

This is how the 5th stage of the Tour of Poland 2025 went

A quartet had the biggest lead in a long time at the Tour of Poland on stage 5. Patrick Gamper (Team Jayco AlUla), Martin Svrcek (Soudal - Quick-Step), Huub Artz (Intermarché - Wanty) and Jensen Plowright (Alpecin-Deceuninck) gained more than six minutes on the peloton.

While Plowright excelled in the sprints, Gamper collected the ten points on the first category 1 mountain of the day after 86 kilometres. On the second, Plowright took the points away from the Austrian to protect his team-mate Timo Kielich in the mountains jersey. There were still 64 kilometres to the finish and the lead was just over three minutes.

On the seemingly endless straights, the escapees were already within sight of the peloton 35 kilometres before the finish despite having a one and a half minute lead. With 20 kilometres to go, Artz and Plowright left their escape companions behind. After the gap to the peloton had already dropped to 40 seconds, the gap subsequently grew to over a minute. But when Plowright could no longer keep up, Artz's time was up shortly afterwards.

Christen and Alberto Bettiol (XDS Astana Team) tried to prevent a bunch sprint in the final wave, but they were also brought back by the peloton. So the fast men decided the race among themselves. And Brennan was clearly the best there.
